The Guangzhou (formerly Canton) Youth Symphony Orchestra, one of China's leading youth orchestras, performs at the Palau de les Arts of Valencia on Friday 21, at 7:30 p.m., as part of its European tour.

The music ensemble in China's third largest city has more than a hundred performers between the ages of 9 and 20. And it arrives in Valencia with its chief conductor at the helm and a concert dedicated to Spanish and Chinese music, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. That is why the Confucius Institute of the Universitat de València (ICUV) has participated and collaborated in this event organised by Ibercamera in collaboration with Wo Promotion.

It also happens that the municipality of Guangzhou, one of the most populated urban areas in the world, has had an active brotherhood agreement with the Valencia’s City Hall since 2017. And under which different initiatives have been carried out, such as illuminating the façade of the City Hall in red for the Chinese New Year celebrations, among others. In this concert, the Guangzhou Symphony presents the European premiere of Metropolis by renowned composer Zhou Tian. Also accompanying this renowned youth orchestra is the brilliant cellist Jian Wang, who has collaborated with great artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Isaac Stern and Maria João Pires.

Thanks to the collaboration of the ICUV in this event, its students can get free tickets on the website https://www.uv.es/confucio. For the director of this university institution that spreads and teaches Chinese language and culture, Vicente Andreu, "it is a real event that we can enjoy such a remarkable performance as that of the Guangzhou Youth Symphony Orchestra in Valencia on Friday 21. Once again, we see that music has become an essential ally for the promotion of culture and dialogue between the two societies, which are not as distant as geography makes it seem".

In 2023, ICUV celebrates 15 years since its foundation "at the service of society", as its motto indicates. It is the official centre for Chinese language examinations, which it has been conducting for more than a decade, and has been granted "Model" status by the Chinese headquarters. More than 5,000 students have passed through its classrooms. In 2017 it received the Distinction for Cultural Merit from the Valencian Government "for serving as a bridge between Chinese and Valencian cultures".
