The Universitat de València became the winner of the Regional University Sports Championship of Athletics, celebrated in the Universitat Jaume I of Castelló, on 15 and 16 April.
The team coached by Rubén Picazo won, one more year, the title of regional champion thanks to the good performance of the 66 athletes of the Universitat de València, who won 37 medals: 14 golden medals, 14 silver medals and 9 bronze medals.
For Rubén Pizaco, coach of the team of the Universitat, the Championship was “very even, the UJI was the first for almost the whole competition and in the last races we got pass them, it was a matter of luck, this year unlike in the past, they were a very competitive team and almost won. Maybe the key is the high participation rate we have, in spite of the absence”.
Regarding the key moments of the competition, Picazo highlights “the final relay races 4x400 in which our athletes pushed to win the highest number of points and to get back in the classification by teams, in which we were second for the whole round. It was very exciting”.
The medallists of the Universitat de València who climbed up the podium to receive the gold medal were: Héctor Cabrera (Spear), Javier Escrivá (Shot put), Álvaro Martínez (High Jump), Manel Miralles (Pole), Borja Añón (400 m.h.), Álvaro Villalba (800 m.d.), Pau Tormo (10.000m racewalking), Alberto Barberá (10.000 m.d.), Carla Masip (1500 m.d.), Rosa Picazo (10.000 m.l.), Andrea Abad (5000 m.l.), Andrea Salvador (Triple Jump) and the men’s and women’s 4x400ml relays. Silver Medals: Adrián Sobrino (High Jump), Ricart Andreu (400 m.d.), Nacho Giménez (1500 m.d.), Sergi Güemes (5000 m.d.), Belén Simarro (High Jump), Aitana López (Pole and y 100 m.h.), Ana Polo (Hammer), Soraya Camarena (800 m.d.), Natalia Gorriz (5000 m.d.), Prudencia Fasoro (3000 m.obs.), Roxana Martínez (Disc) and the two 4x100 m.d. relays. Bronze Medals: Manel Miralles (Shot put), José Mocholí (800 m.d.), Albert Sangil (1500 m.l.), Iván Muñoz (3000 m.obs), Alba Almenar (Shot put), Judith López (200 m.d.), Hannah González (400 m.d.), Patricia Torres (5000 m.d.) and Lidia Hernández (3000 m.obs).
The next appointment for the team will be from 13 to 15 May in Murcia, where 31 athletes will represent the Universitat de València in the Unviersity Spanish Championship. Last year, the team was bronze by teams, for Picazo the objective this year is “to stay there and that all our athletes can achieve the goals they have been working on during the whole season”.
