The Universitat de València rugby team will participate from 25th to 27th of April in the National University Rugby Tournament, both in masculine and femenine categories.
The Tournament will take place in Seville. Both Universitat de València teams arrive to the meeting with the aim of ratifying the champion title which both of them hold.
For the men team, run by Marcos Armiñana, it is their fifth consecutive national. “We always try to be up in the rankings. Luck and hard work have helped us to obtain good results the past four years, but that is not a guarantee”, says the coach.
About the team, Armiñana adds “we have been working for two weaks in order to prepare ourselves for the Tournament. We face it with excitement and responsibility”. The team members are similar to the ones we had last year, although 4 of our players will be out of the champion since they will be in the World U-20 Championship in Zimbawe. Anyways, we are working well and we hope to arrive in good conditions at Seville. This is the last year for some of the players, including the captain Alex Sorribes, so everyone want to end with good taste in the mouth.”
For its part, the women’s team, led by Ana Aigneren will compete its sixth national with the challenge of retaining the current title. The coach has said that the team progression along the last six years has been “excellent, starting competing in rugby 7 in Donosti 2010 finishing in the 11th position, later in Granada ‘11 we ended 9th and in Alp’12 we obtained the 7th position. The following year, in Alp’13 we were 4th. Then Sevilla’14 came, where we achieved bronze medal and lastly in Seville’15 where we obtained the gold and the title of Spanish Champions”. To Aignaren, the challenge is clear “we are going to keep the highest level despite of the absences and the new recruits. We mantain veteran feminine players that form the basis for teaching and setting an example for the beginners. Our female captain Elena López, María Ahís and Eva Martínez will play their 7th CEU; together with Pepa Pérez, laura Piera, María Cardona and Carla Ferrando bear the responsability to continue competing full speed ahead”. Regarding the training, the team “is making a final effort where technical, tactical and physical details are decisive in the moment of truth”
As in other university competitions, Servei d’Educació Física i Esport will offer live coverage on the Internet (Twitter: @sefuv and www.facebook.com/SEFUV) where you can access to all kind of detailed information about the results.
