
The university celebrated the opening of the sport course
The university pavilion of Blasco Ibáñez Campus of Universitat de València carried out last Thursday 16th the Sport Gala, the ceremony in which every year the university athletes are recognised and introduced, by opening the sport course. Esteban Morcillo, the rector of the university went to the Gala together with the vicerector of culture and equality, Antonio Ariño and the director of the Physical Education and Sports Service, José Campos. The aim of this event was to recognise the athletes of the different competitions which, during the last season, have achieved great merits in the sport and to introduced the teams for the next season. The Gala, which had more than 400 athletes, began with the ahtlete’s recognition of more than 30 disciplines that have participated in the Regional University Sports Championship and Spain Sports Championship, after one of the most emotive moment arrived: the tribute to the athletes who have reached excellent results on an international level, for example in disciplines like frontennis and Valencian ball game. Both won the gold in the Regional University Sports and participated in the 19th International University Basque Handball Tournament “Zabalki”. Then the taekwondo team participated, champion of Regional University Sports Championship with 21 medals, Spain champion in the Spanish University Sports Championship with 9 medals and participant of the World University Championship. The next persons who were on the stage were the tennis team that the last season was champion of the Regional University Sports Championship, bronze in the Spain University Championship, and got the fifth position in the 2nd University European Games, carried out in Rotterdam (Holland) last summer. Last, but not least, it was the turn of the women’s football team, a team with many supporters at the university, who has reached shortly great sport successes. Last season they were subchampions of the Regional University Sports Championship and also their teammates of tennis team, they participated in the 2nd University European Games, where played a perfect tournament winning the gold medal.
The most emblematic moment of the Gala was the special tribute to the sport career of four athletes who, by their sport history and their commitment with the university, received the recognition and admiration of all those present. The first one who went on to the stage was Cristina Aullo, Physiotherapy graduate, who during her degree has participated representing the university in all Spain and Europe championships, winning medals in all of them. After Pablo Cantero was next, student of Psychology degree, who last summer got the sixth position in the final phase of long jump in the Europe Championship of athletics in T11 category and he is member as athlete of the programme of the adapted sport of Divina Pastora of Adapted Sports of Universitat de València. From athletics to golf, José Bondia was the next to go up the stage to receive his tribute. The golf player has been golf supreme champion in Valencian Community from 2010 to 2014 and member of the Spanish amateur team from 2008 to 2014, moreover, as university student, has won different championship of Spain and has participated in two championships of the world, where was champion on an university level, the Universiada de Schenzhen, where got a diploma. Finally, Vicenta Cano was honoured. She was handball team’s coach of the University since 20 seasons ago in which has won great titles such as World Championship of 2002. Moreover, as a player, Cano has been 87 times international with the Spanish handball team, with which got to score 364 goals in her career; she was Olympic torchbearer in Barcelona’92 and has been proclaimed national player three times.
The Gala finished with the words of the rector, Esteban Morcillo, who expressed his gratitude for their effort and commitment with the university to all athletes, since the university sport and its teams are the best or one of the best business cards the university has.
