The Beach Volleyball team of the Universitat de València comes back from Murcia with the bronze medal of the Volleyball Spanish University Championship, played in Santiago de la Ribera (San Javier – Murcia).
The team headed by Juanjo Susín attended the national meeting with two teams of two players (male and female) formed by Zdravko Kamenov and Adrián Pastor, and Aurora Ubé and Paula Company.
The couples of the University started the championship very well, winning the University of Almería with a result of 21-14 in the male category, and the Catholic University of Valencia with 21-18 in the female category. The boys ended their second game with a 21-10 against the Miguel Hernández of Elche and the girls worked so hard to won with a 21-15 against the University of Barcelona. The third game made the difference for both couples. The boys won the game against the Polytechnic University of Cartagena with 21-8 while the girls lost against the Complutense of Madrid with 11-21. These games were followed by the victories against the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos with 21-9 for the girls, and against the Universitat Politècnica de Valencia with 21-8 for the boys.
The medal dream vanished for the female couple in the game against the University of Cádiz, a very close game that finally was for the girls from Andalusia with 20-22 and left the girls from Valencia out of the competition. Zdravko Kamenov and Adrián Pastor faced the quarters game against the University of Alacant, in a game they didn’t manage to win and that left them in the losers group to play the semi-final. The rival was the University of Oviedo, the boys did their best and won the game with a result of 21-6 and the pass to the semi-finals.
On Thursday morning took place the male semi-final. Zdravko Kamenov and Adrián Pastor had the host team of the Catholic University San Antonio de Murcia waiting for them at the other side of the net. Despite the good game of the couple of the Universitat de València, the Murcians won and left the boys of the Universitat de València without the possibility of winning a title, who finally came back to the University with a more than deserved bronze medal.
According to the coach, Juanjo Susín, the performance of the girls was “very correct, the group phase was impeccable and they ended in the first position, but then in the double elimination they lost the two games despite their good playing and finally it is a meritable and remarkable ninth position”. Regarding the boys “Zdravko and Adrián got a bronze in the Championship, which might seem an obligation for them in the last years, but it is really complicated and admirable to achieve this. They lost against the finalists, there was a lack of luck for them in the game and reaching the level or their rivals, but I think the game was more than remarkable and that it is very satisfactory going back home with a bronze medal”.
