The human beauty that comes from desolation
Escena Erasmus of the Universitat de València, Honor Award of Valencian Performing Arts 2023, deepens with ‘Un instant de bellesa’ in the desolation that the dana provoked last autumn: a catastrophe without precedents in the South of Valencia, hitting and marking the whole town with the tragedy.
Through the text written by recognised authors of the present cultural scene, some of whom lived that terrible experience in first person, Escena Erasmus UV explores the emotions and feelings of the people who saw life as they knew it disappear as water and dirt came through, but they also saw how in the midst of chaos and destruction, surprising flashes of light appeared in the form of row of volunteers and solidary campaigns from all over the world to remind us that is possible to be reborn again from the mud.
The show at the same time, rethinks about the beauty that, in spite of pain, can arise from natural catastrophes which human beings have to suffer: fire, earthquakes, tsunamis and floods. A human beauty that appears without being asked and which comforts the victims in times of such sadness.
Directed by Josep Valero, the script has been written by Carles Alberola, Carmen Amoraga, Máximo Huerta, Maria Andrés, Joaquín Camps, Marta Toso, Jaime Millás, Sara Olivas, Sergio Serrano and Anna Marí; and the dramaturgy has been coordinated by Daniel Tormo. The play will be performed by a cast formed by eight Erasmus and Valencian students: Lluna Avellaneda, Ollie Binnie, Yasmin Chaabane, Jordi Casamayor, Dolores E. Noriega, Laura Luque, Romain Timmermans and Àngels Vaca.
“Taking urgency in”
Josep Valero has highlighted the effort made in this production that has been developed “among an academic year that has not been easy, full of setbacks that have been marking the consequences of the dana”.
This way, Escena Erasmus UV was taken in “on an urgency” and achieved a text “inviting a dramaturg team that helped us to reflect on the beauty we find among the natural and personal catastrophes; because beauty among catastrophe is not the absence of pain, but the ability of the human being of resisting with dignity, empathy and creativity. It is in this moments where extraordinary gestures emerge and, probably, will not solve anything, but give a sense to our existence”, says Valero.
And he explains: “‘Un instant de bellesa’ is a show built from the entrails that walk through dystopic futures and that marks a continuous line in the form of flashbacks to make a trip from hypothetical crisis provoked by fires and tsunamis to human scenes of people that lived first hand the earthquakes in the centre of Italy and above all the dana in Valencia”.
In ‘Un instant de bellesa’, the public has confronted a theatrical proposal built on a stage with elements that were not found in the place and where “sadness, comedy, rage and calm” have coexisted “when trying to comprehend everything lived to that moment”.
What Escena Erasmus UV has done was offering “many questions and few answers, -as they usually do-, so the public themselves are free to interpret”, pointed the director.
